How To Fix Brakes On Murray Riding Mower

Need help deciding on a riding lawn mower

So a little background first; My wife and I just moved into a new home with a 1.1 acre backyard. It has many trees and plants (all of which have mulch beds) and other obstacles such as a gazebo, swing, playset, etc. For the most part its all open with minimal hills. Now I will obviously need a riding mower as my push mower just wont cut it (pun intended!) and with 2 little ones I want to be spending as little time as possible with yardwork. I am a bit torn as the only place to purchase a rider seem to be big box stores. All the small motor shops only carry zero turn mowers. I am not looking to spend more than $2k. Another reason why I wanted a rider and not a zero turn is because the guy we bought the house from left me a cart to tow branches and whatever else I may need -- and I believe i cant use that with a zero turn? If there are instructions on how to do it I can get it done but I don't know the first thing about anything aside from changing the spark plug and oil.
